With Schumacher back in the driving seat of an F1 car, you have to wonder, has he still got what it takes to compete with the young guns. Technically, Schuey never really retired from F1 as he's been assisting Ferrari in their efforts but there has been a lot of technical advancements and changes since he gave up his seat. So there are a few questions lingering:
1. Is he fit enough?
2. Is he quick enough?
3. Is he mentally in the right place?
4. Is there enough time for him to get out of his cigar jacket and back into his race suit?
"At some point the season is going to get very tough and it's going to get unpleasant and it might bring back memories of why he retired in the first place," said Damon Hill, the 1996 world champion.
There is a lot more competition out there today, the cars are much closer in terms of technical ability, in general, the drivers are younger, hungrier and reaching their prime whilst Schumacher reached his prime some time ago. In my opinion it's going to be tough for him to break in to the winning circle.
There is no doubt that Michael Schumacher was the most successful F1 driver in history but is this just another Bernie trick to increase his F1 TV money ? or has Schmacher still really got what it takes to be the 2010 champ?

in my opinion Schumacher wouldn't get behind the wheel of an F1 car unless he thought he could challenge for the title. Hamilton & Vettel will have to push hard to keep Schumacher off the podium.

ReplyDeleteWell I think Schumacher still is quick and might have a chance for the title of a champion. Others have to keep that in mind, so Vettel good luck in 2010.
I think Schumy will be quick, real quick, not sure about the Mercedes though, guess we'll just have to wait and see at Bahrain....Really looking forward to the start :)
ReplyDeleteB/B/ Bob,
ReplyDeletemy guess is he is being paid well to do this - but agree with John, he would not risk his image if he did not have the confidence (we know he has the skill/killer instinct) to win.
as much as i hate to admit it - he will be a significant distraction for the Brits - let's just hope they don't end up letting him win because of in house politics!
Schuey is definately the greatest driver of all time in my opinion, so what has he got to prove? he cant need the cash, i just hope he doesnt undermine everything he acheived in the past by doing this. I'll still be routing for him though!!
ReplyDeleteI think that he will be a significant threat, even to the new young guns on the grid. He does not really need the money, so he must definitely have a lot of confidence in the car and team, and in being able to fight for the title. He has more to lose than gain from this so I am sure he will be right on the pace from the first race.
ReplyDeleteIn my mind there is no doubt that Schumi will the one to follow in 2010, cant wait to see him back in action...am not a Schumi fan but he brings something special to each race which raises the bar for everyone else.
ReplyDeleteI am very disspointed that Schumacher choose the Mercedes. He spend so much time helping Ferrari with the develoment of the car for so many years now he take all that knowledge and give it for Mercedes.
ReplyDeleteFerrari were loyal to Michael after he retire from driving paying him to be a part of F1 but Schumacher has no loyalty or respect. This for me make me loose all support and respect for Michael Schumacher
Bob, I think the in house politics will play a big part in the 2010 season, and not just within Mercedes....Good point!!
